SalaChat Online Friends

Online Friends Are Real Friends You Haven’t Met in a Room Yet

Some of the people you talk to most might live in another city or another country, and you know their voice better than their street. That is an online friendship. This page is about the friendship itself: what makes it real, how it lasts, and where it lives on SalaChat.

What counts as an online friend?

An online friend is someone you talk to regularly, who remembers what you told them last week and reaches out without being asked. Where you met doesn’t decide it. What decides it is that the two of you keep choosing to talk, the same as with any other friend. Picture a friend you chat with online every few days about nothing much: the weather where they are, what they had for dinner. That counts.

That rules out a lot of what the internet calls friends. A follower count isn’t friendship, and neither is a name you exchanged emojis with once. Most friendships start as a chat, and the change usually comes around the third or fourth conversation, when you stop introducing yourselves and start picking up where you left off.

Are internet friends real friends?

Yes. Internet friends can be as close as any friends you have, and for some people closer, because the friendship is built almost entirely on conversation. What differs is maintenance: you can’t bump into each other at the shop, so somebody has to make the effort to get in touch.

How do you make internet friends who feel like real friends? The same way as offline: time and attention. People sometimes feel they have to apologise for internet friends, as if they were second-best. They aren’t. A person who listens to you on a Thursday night after a rough week is a friend, whether they live two streets away or six time zones away.

The one honest difference is that you know less about each other’s everyday lives at first. You fill that in slowly, over many calls, which is also how it works with a colleague you only see at work.

Why video makes an online friendship feel less virtual

Text-only friendships can feel thin: you never quite know whether someone is joking, tired or upset. Seeing a face and hearing a laugh fixes most of that in seconds. The word “virtual friends” stops fitting once you can tell from their expression that something is wrong before they say it.

That doesn’t mean the camera has to be on from day one. Plenty of online friendships start on Audio or Text and move to video later. On SalaChat you pick the mode at the bottom of the match screen for every new conversation, so you can go at whatever pace feels right.

How do you make online friends when you’re shy?

You make online friends when you’re shy by lowering the stakes: start on Text or Audio, ask small questions about the other person, and give yourself permission to leave a chat that isn’t working. Shy people are often good at the part that matters most, which is listening. Most of it comes down to asking a second question.

It isn’t a special skill, and it gets easier with repetition. The first three conversations feel like a performance; by the tenth you have a few questions you like asking and you notice who answers them well. The whole process, from a random hello to someone you call back, is laid out on make friends online. That page is the practical half of how to make online friends; this one is about what happens once you have them.

Not sure what to say first? The conversation starters guide has openers for video, voice and text, plus an example chat line by line.

Finding online friends worth keeping

Before worrying about how to find online friends, decide how you like to talk. If you think better out loud, start on Audio or Video; if you like to choose your words, start on Text. Then pick a place where you can talk in the way that suits you.

Most online friendship sites give you a profile to fill in and a list to scroll. Judge any of them on the conversations they start: the good ones let you talk to someone tonight, not next week.

Nobody can hand you a friend on demand. What you can do is have a handful of honest conversations and follow the people who made you laugh.

The first conversation is quick; the friendship takes a little longer, and keeping people matters more than collecting them.

Where do your online friends live on SalaChat?

On SalaChat, the people you’ve befriended live in three places: your Following list, your messages, and their own profile. Each one does a different job, and together they are what keeps a good first conversation from disappearing.

Your Following list

Tap Follow on someone’s profile and they are saved there. The people online page also has a Following tab, which keeps them together in one place.

Messages

Write when you think of something, and they read it when they can. Sending messages asks you to sign in, which is also what keeps your follows attached to you.

Their profile

Every profile has Message, Video chat and Follow buttons. The Video chat button rings that person directly, so you are not relying on a random match to bring them back.

That small set of tools is the closest thing SalaChat has to an address book. It is not fancy. It just means you can find someone again on purpose.

How do you keep an online friendship going across time zones?

You keep it going by not depending on being online at the same time. Leave messages for the other person to find in their morning, agree roughly when you are both free, and save the calls for those overlaps. A friendship that runs on replies can survive weeks where your schedules never meet.

A rough habit that works: one message when something reminds you of them, one call a week when your evenings overlap. If you are friends with people abroad, the international friends page has a cheat sheet of what time it is where they are.

Etiquette

Cyberfriend etiquette: what to share and what to keep

A cyberfriend can know a lot about your thoughts and very little about your logistics, and that is a healthy balance for a long time. Share stories, opinions and what your day was like. Keep your home address, workplace, full name and anything financial to yourself until you have known someone for a long while, and money stays off the table altogether.

  • Fine to share early: your first name, your city or country, your job in general terms, what you are watching or reading.
  • Wait a long time: surname, exact neighbourhood, photos of your house or street, your workplace name.
  • Never: passwords, bank or card details, codes sent to your phone, or money for anyone, however sad the story.

Good cyber friendship goes both ways. If someone keeps asking for personal details while sharing nothing back, treat that as a signal. The safety page explains how Report and Block work.

When an online friend wants to move off the site

At some point an online friend may suggest swapping numbers or moving to another app. That is your call, and there is no hurry. If you have only talked a few times, it is fine to say you prefer to keep chatting here for now; a real friend will understand.

SalaChat is a place to talk online, and nothing here needs to move anywhere else. Keeping a friendship on the site, through follows, messages and calls from a profile, is a perfectly good way to have one.

Questions people ask

Online friendships, answered

How do I make internet friends if I hate small talk?

Skip it. Ask about something real instead: what they were doing before the call, what the weather is like where they are, or what they are eating. Small talk is only a warm-up, and you are allowed to jump past it.

How do I make online friends who stick around?

Follow the people you enjoyed talking to and be the first to write after a good chat. People stick around when they feel remembered, and a message that mentions something from your last conversation does that better than anything else.

Is a cyberfriend the same as a friend I met online?

Yes, it is an older word for the same thing: a friend you know mainly through the internet. Some people use it for pen-pal style friendships by text, but the idea is the same.

Is it normal to have an online friend you talk to every day?

Completely. Some people talk to an internet friend more often than to anyone in their building. What matters is that the friendship feels good and isn’t replacing sleep or the rest of your life.

Can an online friendship be as close as one offline?

Yes. Closeness comes from honesty, time and attention, and all three are possible over calls and messages. The difference is that you have to plan contact more deliberately.

Are internet friends safe to trust?

Trust them the way you would trust anyone new: slowly. Share stories before details, never send money, and keep your address and workplace private until you have known them a long time.

Are virtual friends real people?

On SalaChat, yes. The people you meet on the match screen and in the online list are real people. If someone ever acts like a script or asks for money, block and report them.

Is there an online friendship app that uses video?

SalaChat is one. You meet people one to one by video, voice or text, then follow them and call them back from their profile.

Where do I find my online friends again on SalaChat?

In your Following list and your messages, and on their profile, which has a button to start a video chat with them directly.
