Make International Friends Online, One Time Zone at a Time

Friends abroad teach you things a guidebook can’t: what dinner looks like on a Tuesday in another country, which words people actually use, what they find funny. On SalaChat the people you meet can be from almost anywhere, so here is how to find them, talk to them and keep them when your clocks don’t match.

How do you make international friends online from home?

You make international friends online in three steps: pick someone from another country or language on the list of people online (or let a random match surprise you), have a relaxed first conversation, and follow them so you can leave messages across time zones. The rest is patience and curiosity.

  1. Choose by language

The people online page has language tabs, from English and Spanish to Arabic, Vietnamese, Portuguese, Turkish, French, Italian and RU/UA.

  2. Or let chance pick

Start a random match on the match screen. People from 50+ countries use SalaChat, so you never quite know where the next hello comes from.

  3. Follow and write later

Liked them? Follow, then message when it suits you both. Messaging asks you to sign in.

Making friends from abroad doesn’t need an exchange programme or a plane ticket. It needs a few conversations where you ask more than you tell. Knowing how to make friends internationally mostly means being comfortable with a little confusion at first.

Video chat or pen pal: which works better?

Both work, and the best international friendships often use both. A video chat gives you the voice, the accent, the background noise of somebody’s kitchen in another city. A letter-style message gives you time: time to think, to look up a word, to answer properly.

Online pen pals were how many people first made foreign friends, and the slow rhythm still suits some friendships. On SalaChat the call is the fast half and your messages are the slow half. You might talk once on a weekend and then trade messages all week, which is roughly how good pen pal friendships worked anyway, only with faces.

How do you find people who speak a certain language?

Open the list of people online and tap the language tab you want. Each card shows the person’s country flag and the languages they speak, so you can choose someone who shares a language with you or someone who speaks the one you are learning.

This is the simplest answer to how to find international friends who can actually understand you. You can also mix it up: browse the Popular, Online and New tabs and look at the language line on each card. If you only want to practise, say so in your first sentence; most people are happy to help someone who is trying.

What if you don’t share a language?

Then you keep it simple and lean on the parts of a call that don’t need words. Short sentences, slow speech, pointing at things in your room and a lot of smiling get you further than you would expect. Text mode helps too, because written words are easier to work out than fast speech.

A shared second language is the most common bridge. Many people on SalaChat get by in English alongside their own language, and plenty of them are more patient with beginners than you might fear. If it really isn’t working, end the chat kindly and try someone from the language tab instead.

Cheat sheet

When is everyone awake? A time-zone cheat sheet

Most friendships across borders fail on timing, not on language. Use this table to see what time it is in a few big cities when it is 8 p.m. in Istanbul. Istanbul and São Paulo don’t change their clocks; London, New York and Los Angeles move forward an hour in summer, and Manila stays the same all year.

Local time when it is 8 p.m. in Istanbul
CityWinter monthsSummer months
Istanbul8 p.m.8 p.m.
London5 p.m.6 p.m.
New York12 noon1 p.m.
Los Angeles9 a.m.10 a.m.
São Paulo2 p.m.2 p.m.
Manila1 a.m. (next day)1 a.m. (next day)

If you want to meet international friends without staying up all night, plan around these overlaps. Two patterns jump out. Europe and the Americas overlap well in the afternoon and evening, while Manila is asleep when Istanbul is winding down, so friends in Asia are better caught in your morning. After the US, the UK, Germany, Canada and France are among the bigger groups of people on SalaChat, which is why evenings in Europe tend to be lively.

What do you talk about with someone from another country?

Talk about ordinary life. Ask what they ate today, how they get to work, what the weather is doing, what song is playing everywhere right now. Ordinary questions are more interesting across a border than they are at home, and they never come across as rude.

Skip the questions that turn a person into a stereotype (“Is it true everyone in your country…?”). They might laugh once, but they have heard it a hundred times. For openers that work in any language, see the conversation starters guide.

How do you keep a friend in another time zone?

You keep a friend in another time zone by letting messages do the everyday work and saving calls for the hours you overlap. Follow them, write when something reminds you of them, and agree roughly which evening or morning suits a call. Neither of you has to stay up until 2 a.m. for it to work.

A small trick: when you message, mention the time on your side (“Just finished lunch here”). It keeps the distance in view and makes it easy for the other person to picture your day. The broader question of what keeps internet friendships alive is covered on online friends, and the steps from first hello to call-back are on make friends online.

Staying respectful across cultures

Small things differ from place to place: how direct people are, how much they talk about family, what counts as a joke. When in doubt, ask rather than assume, and apologise quickly if something lands wrong. Most people forgive a clumsy question that comes from real curiosity.

The usual safety habits apply everywhere. Keep your address and money out of it, and use Report or Block on a profile if someone behaves badly. The full list is on the safety page.

Questions people ask

International friendships, answered

How do I make international friends online without a language exchange app?

Use a one-to-one chat where you can choose people by language. On SalaChat the online list has language tabs, so you can talk to someone who speaks your language or the one you are learning, and follow them afterwards.

Is there a free app to make friends around the world?

SalaChat is free to start and runs in your browser, with people from more than 50 countries on it. New users get free matches to begin with.

Can I meet people around the world on video?

Yes. Random matches can bring you someone from almost anywhere, and you choose Video, Audio or Text before each match.

How do I meet foreign friends online safely?

The same way you meet anyone online safely: keep personal details private at first, never send money, and use Report or Block if someone behaves badly.

How do you find international friends who reply?

Talk before you message. People reply far more often to someone they have already had a good conversation with than to a cold message.

Is it hard to make friends internationally if my English isn’t great?

Less than you think. Plenty of people speak English as a second language too, and you can also pick people from your own language tab. Short, simple sentences are perfectly fine.

Are online pen pals still a thing?

Yes, though many people now mix letter-style messages with occasional calls. Following someone and writing to them between calls gives you the best of both.

Can I keep friends from abroad when we’re asleep at different times?

Yes. Messages wait for the other person to wake up, so you only need to line up your calls, not every conversation.

Can I chat with people around the world by text first?

Yes. Text is one of the three modes on the match screen, so you can start in writing and move to voice or video once you are comfortable.
