Where can you meet new people online without a dating app?

You can meet new people online on a one-to-one chat that isn’t built around dating: you open it, pick video, voice or text, and talk to someone you have never met. No profile to perfect, no swiping, no “what are you looking for” form. You find out who someone is by talking to them.

Dating apps are designed to sort people into yes and no. That is the wrong shape for meeting someone to talk to. A place where the first thing you do is have a conversation suits that much better, and it doesn’t ask you to pretend you’re looking for a partner when you’re not.

The options boil down to feeds, forums and one-to-one chats. Many of them add a dating layer on top; this one doesn’t, and the talking comes before any profile.

How do you meet people online once your usual crowd is busy every weekend? Start with one conversation, not a whole network. Sometimes you just want to talk to others who don’t already know all your stories.

What’s it like to meet random people on video?

The first second is a little strange: a face appears, they see you, and both of you wait to see who speaks. Then somebody says hello and it turns into an ordinary conversation surprisingly fast. Most people are friendly, a few are in a hurry, and now and then you meet someone you could talk to for an hour.

Chatting to people you don’t know gets easier after the first few times. Meeting new people this way works best if you go in light. Say hi, ask where they are, and see if there is a thread worth pulling. If not, end it politely and start another; the next person is one tap away on the match screen.

  • The first few seconds: a hello, a smile, a glance at what’s behind them.
  • The first question: where are you, what time is it there, what are you up to.
  • The first quiet moment: normal. Ask about something you can see or hear.
  • The decision: keep talking, follow them, or say goodbye and try someone else.

Two ways in

Random match or browse who’s online?

Both work, and they suit different moods. A random match is quicker and full of surprises; browsing lets you choose someone by language or by who seems interesting. Here is how they compare.

If you’d rather talk with random people online than choose, stick to the match screen. Many people do both in one evening: a few random chats to warm up, then a look through the list to find someone specific. Either way you are meeting real people one at a time, which is the whole idea behind 1v1 chat.

Can you talk to new people without being on camera?

Yes. The match screen has three modes at the bottom, Video, Audio and Text, and you choose before every match. Audio gives you a real voice with no picture; Text lets you type to a stranger at your own pace. You can switch modes from one match to the next.

Starting without a camera is a good way to get comfortable. Plenty of people only turn on video once they’ve had a few chats and know how the first minute feels.

How do you meet people from somewhere else?

Use the language tabs on the people online list, or just take random matches; people from 50+ countries use SalaChat, so the next hello could come from almost anywhere. Each profile card shows a country flag and the languages the person speaks, so you can meet people across the world without leaving the couch.

If meeting people abroad is the point for you, read the guide to international friends. It has a time-zone cheat sheet and ideas for what to talk about with someone from another country.

Leaving a conversation without being rude

You are allowed to leave any chat, at any time, and you don’t owe anyone a reason. Still, a quick “Nice talking to you, take care” before you go takes a moment and keeps the place pleasant for everyone. Ending a chat to try someone else is part of how this works, not an insult.

If someone is rude or makes you uncomfortable, skip the politeness. End the chat, and if needed open their profile and use Report or Block.

When you meet someone you like talking to

Follow them before you go. Following saves them to your list, and from their profile you can message them later or start a video chat directly, instead of hoping chance brings you together again. Messaging asks you to sign in.

The simplest advice on how to meet new people online is also the most useful: say hello first, and follow the ones you liked. That step is where meeting someone turns into knowing someone. What to do next, from the first message to calling back, is laid out on make friends online.

Meeting new people online safely
