A few people you could meet

The online list shows who is on SalaChat right now, and it changes by the minute. Sort it by Popular, Online or New, or pick a language tab such as English, Spanish or Turkish, then open a profile to follow, send a message or start a video chat. The photos here are a few of the people you could meet; open the list to see who is actually around.

What is SalaChat?

SalaChat is a one-on-one video chat that runs in your browser, built for making friends rather than dates. You meet one person at a time by video, voice or text, and when a conversation goes well you can follow them and pick it up again later. Some people write it Sala Chat; it’s the same place.

“Sala” is the room in the house where people sit down and talk. That’s the idea behind the whole thing: one sofa, two people, nobody watching from the back row. There are no group rooms to wander into and no feed to scroll while you decide whether to say hello.

You don’t need to fill in a profile before your first match. Open the match screen, pick a mode and press start. The interesting part, and the reason we built it, comes after that first call. It’s explained a little further down this page, and in full on the page about how to make friends online.

How it works

Three moves to someone new

A first video chat with a stranger takes three moves: choose a mode, meet one person, and decide whether you want to see them again. Your browser asks for the camera or microphone the first time, and that’s the only setup there is.

  1. Pick video, voice or text

The switch sits at the bottom of the match screen. Video if you feel like being seen, Audio if you don’t, Text if the house is asleep.

  2. Meet one person

Press start and someone new appears. Say hi, say where you are, and see if the conversation has legs.

  3. Follow if it clicks

Liked talking to them? Follow before you move on. Next time you can message first or call straight from their profile.

Every screen, every button and the quick fixes for a camera that won’t start are on how SalaChat works.

What happens after a call that went well?

You follow the person, and they stop being a one-off. From their profile you can send a message whenever something reminds you of them, or start a video chat with that one person. Your conversations sit in your messages, so you can find each other again without trading phone numbers.

  1. Follow

One tap on their profile. They’ll show up under Following on the people list.

  2. Message

Write first, ask how the exam went, send the song you mentioned. Messaging asks you to sign in.

  3. Call back

Their profile has a video chat button that rings only them, not a random match.

  4. Find them again

Your threads stay in your messages, so the conversation has a history.

Most people you meet on any chat site are a hello and a goodbye. A few of them make you laugh, or know a lot about something you care about, or are simply easy to talk to on a slow evening. Those are the ones worth keeping, and keeping them shouldn’t depend on luck.

Say you get on well with someone at eleven at night and both have to go. Without a follow, the only way to meet again is to hope the random match puts you together, which it almost never will. With a follow, you send a line the next day and they reply when they’re free. That’s how a stranger becomes an online friend here: not in one long call, but over a few short ones.

If you want to know what to say in that second conversation, the guide to conversation starters has openers for the first call and for the message after it.

Built for the second conversation

Everything here is there to help you talk to someone again.

One person at a time

No group rooms, no audience. Whatever you say, one person hears it.

Walk in as a guest

Matching doesn’t start with a form. Make an account later, when there’s someone worth keeping.

Follow the ones you like

A follow turns a lucky match into someone you can find again, message and call.

Report or block from a profile

If someone spoils it, their profile has Report and Block. You can also just leave the chat.

Random match or pick someone yourself

There are two ways in, and most people use both. One leaves the choice to chance; the other lets you look first.

If you’re not sure which suits you, the page on how to meet new people compares the two in more detail, including what to do when a random match isn’t going anywhere.

Why one person at a time?

Because conversation works better with two. In a group call somebody always talks over somebody else, the quiet person never gets a word in, and you spend half the time watching other people chat. One-on-one, there’s no one to perform for. You can be a bit boring, a bit nervous or a bit odd, and the only person who notices is the one you’re talking to.

It also changes what you talk about. With an audience people go for the joke that works on everyone. With one person you ask the follow-up question, and the follow-up is where people get interesting. That’s why we left out group rooms, a feed and swipeable cards. If you want the long version, the page on 1v1 video chat sets out what a one-to-one call is and isn’t.

Live

Watching someone live before you call

The video feed has a Live section where you can drop into someone’s live room, watch, leave a comment and send a gift. If you’d like more than a comment, you can ask for a one-on-one from the room. It’s a low-pressure way to get a feel for someone before you talk to them directly.

Live is for watching. You can’t start a broadcast of your own on SalaChat, and a one-on-one call has no audience: the live rooms and your private chats are separate things.

Do you need an app or an account?

No to both, at least to begin with. SalaChat runs in the browser on your phone or computer, and you can add it to your home screen so it opens like an app. There’s nothing to download from a store. The SalaChat app page shows how to add it on an iPhone and on Android.

You can start matching as a guest, without an email or a password. When you want to keep the people you follow and send them messages, you’ll be asked to sign in. The page on video chat with no sign-up lays out what a guest can do and when an account starts to make sense.

Free to start, and what comes after

  1. Free matches

For new users, to try it out.

  2. Rewards

Pop up now and then with more matches.

  3. Coins

    For matches after that.

  4. VIP

    Optional monthly membership.

SalaChat is free to start. New users get free matches, and rewards with more matches pop up now and then while you use the site. When those run out, matches use coins, and there’s an optional VIP membership for people who use it a lot.

How coins are spent during a call, what VIP includes and how to avoid spending by accident are covered on one page, so the answer is always the same: is SalaChat free?.

Questions people ask about SalaChat

What is SalaChat?

SalaChat is a one-on-one chat for making friends online. You meet one person at a time by video, voice or text, follow the people you get on with, and message or call them again from their profile. It runs in your browser and is free to start.

What’s the best video chat if I want friends, not dates?

Look for one where you talk before you judge anyone. On SalaChat there’s no swiping on photos and no matching on looks: you talk first, and you decide afterwards whether to keep in touch. If someone wants to steer it towards dating and you don’t, you can say no or leave.

Do I need a webcam?

Not necessarily. Video is only one of three modes. Video uses your camera, but the match screen also has Audio, which only uses your microphone, and Text, which needs neither. Plenty of people start on audio and switch to video once they’re comfortable.

Does SalaChat work on my phone?

Yes. SalaChat runs in the browser on iPhone and Android, using the front camera. Allow camera and microphone access when your browser asks, and hold the phone at eye level so the other person isn’t looking up your nose.

How do I make a video chat fun with someone I just met?

Ask about something you can see: the poster behind them, the weather in their window, the cat walking across the keyboard. Questions about the moment get better answers than questions about job titles, and they make the first minute feel less like an interview.

Can I chat without turning my camera on?

Yes. Pick Audio or Text at the bottom of the match screen and your camera stays off. You can choose a different mode for every match.

Who will I meet on SalaChat?

Real people from more than 50 countries. About one user in five is in the US, and after that the UK, Germany, Canada and France are among the larger groups. The people list can be sorted by language if you want someone who speaks yours.

Can I talk to the same person again?

Yes, if you follow them. Their profile lets you send a message or start a video chat with them directly, and your conversations stay in your messages. Messaging asks you to sign in.

Do I have to sign up before my first match?

No. You can match as a guest. An account becomes useful when you want to keep follows and message people you’ve met.
